Reflections Thanksgiving

Reflections from the River – Thanksgiving

As seasons change from summer to fall, it often reminds us that life is like a river. It is never constant. It is always changing, and we should be grateful for the time we have together. Today is Thanksgiving and while there is so much emphasis on what is bad in this world, I want to take a moment to reflect on some of the good in this world.

Freedom

We paddlers are fortunate to have public access to limitless bodies of water. We can share our passion for the water with family and friends unlike anywhere else in the world. We can travel across state borders and experience new waters at a moment’s notice.

Family

While not everyone has a nuclear family to celebrate or spend time with, as paddlers, we are part of a family. This paddler family shares good times and bad, celebrates successes and mourns losses. It is a dynamic group of individuals and regardless of which group, club or other label we claim, we are family. We even have that crazy uncle that shows up at random from time to time.

Fun

For those of us that have a passion for paddling, the world has never been more fun. There are new whitewater features being added by river communities. There is an ever expanding series of maps and apps that help us plan and navigate our next adventure. You can rent or buy gear and equipment a very low cost. There are opportunities for fishing, camping and wilderness adventure.

Give Thanks

Today is a day to celebrate fellowship, family and friends. I am very thankful for the great people that support each other and the work we do to keep the waterways safe and clean. I am thankful for the clubs and individuals that explore the world around them and interact with nature. I am thankful for the leadership that continues to create new ways to access and experience our waterways. And I am thankful to be part of a great groups of men and women who want to make the world a better place for this generation and the next.

This Thanksgiving, I hope you and your family (regardless of bloodlines) are blessed and wish you a safe and happy holiday. From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving.
