As spring begins to open opportunities to paddling, there are a couple simple things to keep in mind if you are looking forward to your first paddle experience with or without a guide. These simple tips are beneficial whether you are renting or you just purchased your first kayak.
- Choose a relatively small, flat body of water.
- Choose a sunny, calm day with little or no breeze.
- Find an easy launch location, preferably with soft sand.
- Plan your day and don’t exceed 2 hours on the water.
- Have a Float Plan
The RIVER RANGERS™ prefer the rivers and streams, but strongly urge novice paddlers to seek calm waters such as a pond or small lake for your first paddle experience. This will allow for a better experience on the water learning your paddle strokes and understanding your yak. Additionally, the sandy launch will make handling your boat easier to manage and less likely to cause damage if you have any trouble. Remember, you should not be planning to explore new territory. This is a chance to enjoy the water and learn some basics of paddling.
